The problem
A client’s HP laptop used an Intel Optane Memory M10 module paired with a 1TB HDD – a hybrid storage configuration that functions as a RAID array, caching frequently used data on the fast Optane module. During a storage upgrade, the Optane module was removed without properly unpairing it from the HDD. After the new SSD was installed and Windows rebooted, the client’s data – more than 150GB – became inaccessible due to the broken logical link between the Optane module and the HDD.
The challenge
Reading the HDD directly was impossible: the partition structure lived in the paired Optane metadata. The recovery required restoring the pairing between the two devices without damaging either.
Our approach
- We assessed the storage configuration and confirmed the nature of the failure.
- Using specialized data recovery tools, we created images of both the HDD and the Optane module.
- We correctly re-paired them using the metadata and identified the partition structure.
- The data was recovered and verified for integrity to ensure no corruption occurred during the process.
The result
More than 150GB of data successfully recovered from the hybrid RAID configuration, fully verified and returned to the client.
