The problem
A medical center in Chicago, IL ran a multi-terabyte SAN with more than 50 LUNs. When they called us, the NTFS volumes on 5 LUNs could not be mounted. Those volumes contained patient records – and without access to them, no patient care could be performed. This was an emergency.
The challenge
Healthcare data is governed by HIPAA, and the clock was running. Every hour without the patient records delayed care. The drives were all active and functioning, which pointed to a logical/configuration failure – a perfect case for remote recovery.
Our approach
We used the ACE Remote Recovery Manager (ARRM) to connect securely to the client’s environment and begin diagnostics immediately – no shipping, no waiting.
- Diagnosis found that all 5 LUNs had lost their partition and LVM configuration data.
- Our engineers downloaded proprietary utilities and analyzed sectors on the LUNs, gathering enough metadata to re-create the lost volumes.
- Because the client wanted work done on “live” data, we imaged all 5 LUNs to backup copies.
- We then manually repaired the LUNs in place.
The result
100% of the patient data delivered back to the client in less than 24 hours – with the original LUNs repaired in place, so the medical center could resume patient care immediately.
